Booker T. Washington School, Gainesville, Texas

Picture
During the early 1900s, the lack of institutions for the Northeast Texas African-American community was evident.  With the help of the Booker T. Washington School, once known as The Gainesville Colored School, sufficient education for African-Americans in the local community of Gainesville was obtainable.  Not only did the Booker T. Washington School provided a sufficient education, but it allowed for the African-American community to participate in sports and UIL events—establishing valuable efforts in all educational aspects among the community.  Despite its efforts, lack of funding caused the Booker T. Washington School to close, a process very similar to our current financial struggles.
